Ali and Isaac are in love. Ali has just left Isaac. As she awaits a train back to her childhood home, she decides instead to return to their relationship and see if, with a little understanding and honesty, they can’t make it work. The film creates a portrait of their developing relationship through the small, intimate moments spent together in their home.

Hidden Light sets out to explore what happens when two people who are in love reach a point of stagnation in their relationship. Through the course of the film we witness the undulating nature of Ali and Isaacs relationship; the happiness of their love balanced out with their attempts to deal with each other’s failings and sometimes conflicting characteristics. Through an awareness of their own idiosyncrasies and an acceptance that relationships aren’t perfect, they move towards a more open and honest connection.

C a s t   &  C r e w

With the initial conception of Hidden Light I wanted to explore the duality of two people in love who have reached that all familiar point of stagnation in their relationship. In thinking about this I was interested in how the notion of openness and honesty could play a role in this relationship lethargy; how they might provide a medicinal solution and aid the development of this complex human connection. Ultimately I wanted to look at the hopeful side of this scenario, exploring what might at times be a difficult but ultimately rewarding re-examination of assumptions made and things left un-said.

I want to explore these proposed notions in a quiet way; not with an overtly dramatic context but filtered through the ebb and flow of domesticated life. My sense that most things happen, when nothing at all is happening seemed pertinent especially given the context of the premise itself – stagnation explored through the ordinariness of the everyday. And in the midst of all this is the question in the back of my mind, what role can cinematic space play in the telling of Ali and Isaac’s relationship? How would the combination of sound and image, of music and light, create the atmosphere of their relationship and the texture of their journey, through it’s ever changing complexities and their quest of joint discovery.

Writer/Director - Andrew Visser
Andrew graduated with a first class honors degree in Film and Video from The Surrey Institute of Art and Design in 2005 where he specialized in writing and directing. His graduation film ‘Double Helix’ went on to screen at several festivals, including Brief Encounters International Short Film Festival where it picked up the NAHEMI/Kodak Prize for Creative Filmmaking and The End of the Pier International Film Festival where it won Best Short Drama.

Since the summer of 2006 Andrew has worked as Production Coordinator at the University College for the Creative Arts on their Film Production BA. Alongside this he has continued to work on various short film projects including editing several shorts for Tiga Kali Studio, shooting another (alongside Ben Jones) and acting in the capacity as either Producer or Executive Producer.

Andrew established ‘A Room of One’s Own Films’ in spring 2007 when he started collaborating with Daniel Rothschild, working again in the capacity of writer and director on ‘Untitled Relationship Portraits’, a series of ongoing micro shorts. ‘Hidden Light’ sees Andrew working once more with Alex Barrett and collaborating again with the filmmakers behind ‘Double Helix’.

Producer - Alex Barrett
In 2005, Alex received a BA (Hons) in Film and Video from The Surrey Institute of Art & Design, where he developed a style of mixing striking visuals and probing philosophical inquiry, before exploring the film-making medium itself in his graduation film 'Is This A Question? Is This An Answer?', which enjoyed several successful festival screenings. During his final year, Alex also edited the festival-screened short film 'Tuesday'.

In Autumn 2005, he co-founded the production company Tiga Kali Studio, and has since gone on to write and direct a number of personal and commissioned projects with the company, notably the festival-screened film ‘Great & Small’ (runner-up at Insight Film Festival 2007). In addition, he has also achieved success with his freelance work, such as the WWII-drama Between the Lines (FXHome.com’s top rated film of all time). He has recently compeleted two short films as writer/director – 'Canbury' & 'Andrew' – both of which are expected to play at festivals over the coming year.
